Another question about the Cat and Rat

The proposal says that the Cat and Rat roll 1d4 (or 1d6) and move that many squares towards (or away) from each other. Is this movement based on the numeric order of the board (as is being used by the Rber Ducky) or the grid layout of the board (as is being used by units)? The proposal doesn't say either way.
