I always assumed that by always occupying one square, you go from occupying the initial square to occupying the end square, from one instant to the next. In that instant, you pass through all squares in between. Passing through isn't occupying, but a seperate condition that can be triggered by rules that specifically mention it.

At least, that's how I've seen it.
